Specialist tutoring for bright children
who find school harder than it should be
Plenty of tutors offer help with dyslexia, but far fewer are trained to teach it. Sophie Honsinger holds a Level 5 Diploma in teaching learners with specific learning difficulties alongside over a decade in primary and specialist schools, and teaches one to one from Tooting near Wandsworth or online.
You do not need a diagnosis to get in touch, and whatever age your child is now, this is not too late to begin.
Does this sound like your child?
Most parents arrive having noticed one of these, often for a long time before anyone named it.
Reading is a battle
They can talk brilliantly about a subject, then struggle to read a page about it. Homework takes twice as long as it should, and everyone ends up upset.
Spelling will not stick
They learn the words on Monday and the words have gone by Friday. The same word turns up spelled three different ways in one piece of writing.
They think they are stupid
This is the one that worries parents most. A child who avoids reading, calls themselves stupid, or has a stomach ache every school morning.
How it works
-
A free call
Sophie talks with you for 15 minutes about what is going on at home and at school, and tells you honestly whether she can help. There is no charge for the call and no obligation afterwards.
-
Assessment before teaching
She finds out exactly where your child is, across reading, spelling, phonics, memory and writing. This is an assessment that shows your child's strengths and needs, so that everything taught afterwards is individually tailored to them.
-
Weekly lessons
Lessons run for an hour a week, at her teaching room in Tooting, at your home or online. They are multisensory and practical, with movement breaks, and everything in them is planned around your child.
Why a specialist rather than a general tutor
A good tutor can help a child who has fallen behind. A child with dyslexia has usually not fallen behind; they have hit something that a normal amount of extra practice does not fix, and teaching them well takes different training and different methods.
Sophie trained at Fairley House School, which specialises in exactly this, and then spent years using it every day.
Qualifications
- Level 5 Diploma in Teaching Primary and Secondary Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties, Fairley House School, accredited by the CPD Standards Office
- PGCE for ages 5 to 11, and Qualified Teacher Status
- Thirteen years teaching, including in a specialist SpLD school
Not sure whether Sophie is the right person?
That is exactly what the free call is for. Tell Sophie what is happening and she will tell you what she thinks, including if she thinks someone else would suit your child better.
